A Modelltest (also called a Modellsatz) is an official-format practice exam released by Goethe-Institut to show candidates exactly what the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 exam looks like, the task types, instructions, timing, and scoring. It is not a past paper; it is a constructed model that demonstrates the format without revealing actual exam content.
Every Modelltest follows the same fixed structure: four modules, each scored independently out of 100. To receive the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 you must pass all four modules, but the exam is modular: you can take the modules together or separately, and if you fail one you retake only that module, not the whole exam.
Practising with a Modelltest does two things simultaneously: it trains the specific task formats, which never change between exam versions, and it calibrates timing. Most candidates who fail Lesen or Hören run out of time, not knowledge. A timed Modelltest exposes that gap early.
The exam
The four modules in Modelltest format
The table below shows each module, its duration, number of parts (Teile), maximum points, and what a pass requires. All timing is fixed; there is no borrowing time between modules.

Lesen is the longest written module at 65 minutes. It has five Aufgaben: globales Lesen (matching texts to headlines), Detailverstehen (multiple-choice on a longer article), selektives Lesen (matching statements to short texts), a Richtig/Falsch/Nicht-im-Text notice text, and Sprachbausteine (a cloze). Hören runs 40 minutes and covers four listening task types, global comprehension, detail comprehension, selective listening from radio-style recordings, and a phone message with Richtig/Falsch items. Audio plays twice for most tasks. Practise with real audio in the Hören section.
Schreiben gives candidates 60 minutes to complete three writing tasks: an informal email, a forum post giving an opinion, and a semi-formal email or note. All three are scored for content, communicative intent, and language accuracy. Sample tasks with automatic feedback are in the Schreiben section.
Sprechen is conducted in pairs or small groups and lasts roughly 15 minutes. It has three parts: planning a shared activity, giving a short presentation on an everyday topic, and responding to your partner's presentation. Timing
Time budget per part, and where points are lost
Most failed modules are lost on time, not knowledge. The table below shows a proven time budget per part and the most common reason candidates lose points, so you know where to speed up and where to slow down in the Modelltest.

Rule of thumb: in Lesen, flag hard questions and move on rather than getting stuck, there is no penalty for a wrong answer but a blank never scores. In Hören the audio sets the pace, so your only lever is focusing on signal words. In Schreiben, spend one minute planning before you write so every guide point is covered.
Study plan
How to prepare with the Modelltest in 2 weeks
Two focused weeks are enough to lift a borderline score. Short, timed, daily runs beat one long marathon: the goal is to fix your weakest module and get comfortable with the clock. Here is a plan that works.

The single biggest gain in two weeks comes from timing, not new vocabulary — most candidates who fail Lesen or Hören simply run out of time, so every run above is against the clock.

The two formats do different jobs. A printed PDF is the closest thing to exam day: one timed run, no feedback until you mark it. An interactive Modelltest is better between runs, because it tells you why an answer was wrong while the decision is still fresh.

What is a Goethe B1 Modelltest?
A Goethe B1 Modelltest is an official-format practice exam published by Goethe-Institut (or a platform mirroring that format) that shows candidates exactly what the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 looks like. It covers all four modules, Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen, at the same level and in the same task format as the live exam. Practising with a Modelltest trains both the task formats and the timing before exam day.
How long is the Goethe B1 Modelltest?
The written modules total approximately 2 hours 45 minutes:
- Lesen: 65 minutes, 5 Teile
- Hören: 40 minutes, 4 Teile
- Schreiben: 60 minutes, 3 Teile
- Sprechen: ~15 minutes per candidate, 3 Teile (separate session)
All timing is fixed. Practising within the time limits is as important as practising the content, running out of time is the most common avoidable reason for failing Lesen.

What is the pass mark for the Goethe B1 exam?
Each of the four modules is worth 100 points. The pass threshold is 60 out of 100 in every module individually. A strong Lesen score cannot compensate for a Hören score below 60. The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is a modular exam, so you can retake just the module(s) you fail rather than re-sitting the whole exam. For full exam structure details, see the exam overview.
